CHRISTIAN BROADCASTER

Volume 2 Issue 25                      JUNE 2000

LATE BREAKING NEWS
David Aiken

On Thursday, May 11, Eric Anderson from Anderson Computer Consulting installed a new wireless Internet connection for TV-39. This connection allows the station to connect at speeds up to 1,500,000 bits per second compared to 56,000 bits, which was the maximum available on its dial up connection. TV-39 was chosen to be the initial test site for the new system to determine potential problems with it before it is offered to the rest of the community.

"How fast is it," you ask? My answer is, "WOW!! IT IS FAST!!" This system is so fast that we can transfer high quality video over it. This opens up tremendous possibilities for our stations. For the last six months we have been able to transfer video from computer to computer over the station’s internal computer network, but not to remote locations because our Internet connection did not have the speed or bandwidth necessary. This wireless system provides that bandwidth.

Any computer network is only as fast as its slowest link. Therefore, data can leave Marion at high speed over the wireless Internet, transfer around the world over the high speed internet backbone, and then reach a slow link just before reaching its final destination—resulting in a slow and unusable connection. On June 1, 2000, we will attempt to patch this one weak link between Marion and Delaware by installing a high-speed DSL line at the Delaware station. This will allow the Delaware station to have a high-speed connection to the Internet. Within the next two months, we hope to start regularly transferring video between the Marion and Delaware stations over this Internet connection. Video from both stations will be viewable on the web site www.coacb.org.

Because high-speed data lines are becoming available to the general public, in the near future we may see many people dropping cable TV and begin receiving TV stations over the Internet.

INTERN FOR MAY
Doug Smith

As those of you who frequent by the TV-39 station may have noticed, there has been an extra body hovering around recently. This extra person would be me, Doug Smith. I am a Communication Arts major at Malone College—a Christian liberal arts college in Canton, Ohio. Since the second week in May, I have been spending my summer break here as an intern—learning about "the real world" as David Aiken puts it.

Here at the station, I am gaining a wide variety of knowledge. I am learning about the station from the inside out. In a class, I would not be able to witness all that I am learning about first hand here. For instance, Ben Kalb has shown me the equipment of Cutting Edge Technology and even let me assist him in making a commercial. I have also been able to gain computer knowledge from the people here and from working out problems on my own. Mr. Aiken has also let me take on a rather large project in which I am working on a packet of information and exhibits to prove to Time Warner that WOCB TV-39 should be carried on more of their cable systems.

The work hasn’t all been easy, but it has taught me more than even I realize. I know that the time I put in these last three weeks of May will prove useful to me in so many ways in the future. It has been a pleasure working here and I thank the Lord for the great opportunity I have had.

GOSPEL SINGINGS

The first Saturday night of each month, there is a live gospel singing at TV-56, located at 36 Spring Street in Delaware. The next singing is June 3, 2000 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Featured groups will be Debbie Carson, Steve and Diane Powers, and Annette Johnson.

The third Saturday night of each month, there is a live gospel singing at TV-39, 1282 North Main Street, in Marion. The next singing will be June 17, 2000 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Featured groups will be Released, Mike Abrams, The Parsons Family, and Reflections of Joy.

Also, the fourth Saturday night of each month there is a live gospel singing at our studio in Kenton, Ohio, 14 North Main Street. The next scheduled singing at Kenton is June 24, 2000. Featured groups will be The Gulletts and The Gospel Ambassadors. FREE ADMISSION & EVERYONE IS WELCOME TO ALL SINGINGS.

FAMILY PORTRAITS

Pictures have already been taken in Marion and Kenton, but sittings had to be rescheduled in Delaware because of the festival that blocked downtown Delaware streets on May 19. Volunteers from the Delaware station are continuing to sell coupons and persons who missed their sitting in Marion or Kenton can use their coupons in Delaware. The cost of each coupon is $5.00 and is good for one 10"x13" family portrait. TV-56 hopes to use this picture project to retire some debt and upgrade its studio. Pictures will be taken June 10. If you can help with sales or wish to purchase coupons, please contact Reta at (740) 383-1794. Please help make this project a great success.

COACB LOVE GIFT FOR JUNE

The love gift for June is a beautiful little angel ornament to hang from the rear view mirror in your car. Let it remind us that the LORD does give his angels charge over us to protect us from harm and danger. This love gift will be sent to all that donate at least $5.00 to the COACB during the month of June.

SUPPORT A DAY OF OPERATION

Individuals and businesses can provide grants to the COACB for a day of operation. The COACB publicly recognizes grants over its stations, its newsletter, its Internet site and a sign posted in the lobby of its corporate office. Each day of operation costs the COACB $300.

These grants can be made to honor or celebrate any occasion such as anniversaries, weddings, birthdays, graduations, remembering loved ones, or promoting the gospel. To reserve a day, contact Reta at (740) 383-1794.

WOMEN AT WORK

The women of TV-39 have been hard at work raising money to purchase a new sign and reseal the parking lot. To date, they have raised about $5,000 of the $6,500 needed to complete the project..
