Volume 2 Issue 26                       JULY 2000

LATE BREAKING NEWS
David Aiken

It was standing room only in the city council chambers as Kenton residents came to ask Kenton City Council members to join in an effort to retain TV-48 on the Time Warner CATV System. Council then directed their attorney to draft a letter to Time Warner showing council’s desired that TV-48 remain in the cable line-up. This was all prompted by the June 1, 2000 announcement by Time Warner Cable of its plans to drop TV-48 from the Kenton cable system. They stated that the cable system in Kenton would be fed from the Columbus head end and that TV-48 will not remain in the channel lineup. This announcement brought an immediate outcry from the Kenton community. The Kenton Times ran two fine articles that were very supportive of the station.

As of press time it appears that even over the desires of hundreds of Time Warner customers and the opposition of Kenton City Council, Time Warner is moving ahead to drop the channel. The COACB is now offering free TV antennas to all Kenton area residents so they can continue to receive TV-48.

COACB LOVE GIFT FOR JULY

The love gift for July is a beautiful keychain featuring a cross. Embossed on the cross is the inscription PAID IN FULL. Let your keychain witness to the fact that all your sins and shortcomings were PAID IN FULL at the cross of Calvary almost 2000 years ago. This love gift will be sent to all that donate at least $5.00 to the COACB during the month of July.

NEW CAMERA FOR KENTON

Using money raised by the picture project, the Kenton station is getting a new Sony TR-87 camera. The camera has been ordered and will be installed as soon as it arrives. This camera will provide a much superior picture and is anxiously awaited by the crew.

A NEW REVOLUTION IS COMING

Picture what your life would have been like if the industrial revolution had not occurred. No cars, no electricity, no radio, no television and no telephone. Most people lived out their lives and died without ever venturing more than 60 miles from the place where they were born. News from distant communities took weeks or months to arrive. Now government leaders say that an Internet revolution has begun and will change almost every aspect of our lives.

Take a look at new cellular phones. In addition to all the normal phone functions, some now offer a built in camera and video screen. These allow you to send and receive e-mail, surf the web, and do video conferencing. Videophone calls will soon become the norm. New home appliances are also appearing that come already equipped for Internet communications. You can log on from anywhere in the world to check if a burner on the stove was left on, raise or lower the home thermostat, check on home security, determine if the house is occupied and even turn on cameras so that activities can be monitored over the web.

Web casting is a new phenomenon. One application that uses only a camera equipped laptop, and a wireless internet connection enables grandparents living in distance cities to watch their grandchildren perform in real time. Major motel chains such as the Marriott and Fairfield Inns are using similar technology to provide video services for their guests. These services include cable TV, video on demand, and numerous informational services.

The COACB’s goal is to use this emerging technology to make its stations viewable worldwide and make its programs available as video on demand. Viewers can watch what they want and when they want to see it. We are rapidly moving toward this goal with the activation of the new wireless system in Marion and the new DSL line for the Delaware station.
